Identification is the process by which an individual claims an identity
Hi Everyone,
Identification is the process by which an individual claims an identity when they want to access a system. The process involving providing information such as the username, the Identification card or smart cards. Since these documents have a specific number for each individual, then they are used to identify that particular person. However, for some systems such as the ATM, identification is not necessary since by entering the right code, the system assumes that the identity of the person is confirmed.
Authentication, on the other hand, is the process by which a user is required to prove their identity by providing necessary information. For instance, a person is asked to provide a password for the username they used to identify themselves. Authentication may occur after or during the identification process. Apart from the fact that authentication is done after identification, the other difference between the two aspects is that identification is an easy task that is used when there are no security concerns while authentication is used in cases of security concerns.
Creating role-related access limitations could help to enhance security since sensitive data is only accessed by people who are trusted hence securing the organization. Limiting access also prevents malware propagation from one system to another, which can lead to loss of essential data. Lastly, the deployment of the new software is more straightforward and are more stable since the number of people who can make changes are limited.
