in the story “Too Much Happiness”
when women do some research or any discovery, it is not highlighted like that of men because of gender. No doubt, it is a pathetic approach of men. Because gender should not be a criterion for judging a work, many women can do remarkable work in science, physics, mathematics, philosophy, etcetera. However, they are not accredited. Like in the story “Too Much Happiness” in the first place, Professor Weierstrass did not pay any attention to Sophie, and secondly, when she came back with all the equations solved, he doubted her skill and thought it must be a work of any boy. To him, a woman was not capable of performing such a task. Women’s works should be given the same importance as men’s works, and it should be clear that women are as capable as men are. Gender is just a stereotype when it comes to research or discovery since it is the work or thought that counts, not the gender of the creator or discoverer. Gender must be treated just as a biological difference, nothing more than that. However, the reality is quite contradictory; there is a line drawn between the works of men and women. Everything is specified with gender. “And they would never meddle with it; between men’s work and women’s work was the clearest line drawn and any stepping over this line.” Munro (1983). All the research work and discoveries should be paid alike for attention and appreciation for benefiting the world, like if a woman has done useful research that can be valuable for humanity or discovered something that can be fruitful for the society. Then it should be accepted. Katherine Louise Bouman, an American engineer and computer scientist has made a revolutionary discovery. She works in the computer imagery field and led the development of an algorithm for imaging black holes, known as Continuous High-resolution Image Reconstruction, using Patch priors (CHIRP). She became the first woman who, along with her team, captured the first image of a black hole. Indeed, she did splendid research work. If the world just discriminated against her and did not pay due attention to her research just because of her gender, it would bring a loss to no one else than the whole world and a patriarchal community. So research should always be done and accepted based on the intelligence and mental capabilities of a human being, not just a man or woman.
To conclude, it can be said that we live in a patriarchal world where men make the parameters and imply them. It is due to the same reason many smart women like Sophia Kovalevsky are ignored or face hardships of making their place in the community. It is a
wrong approach and should be condemned by everyone, and the main focus
should only be the work done by anyone from any gender and background. It
will be beneficial for humanity.
