Innovation Plan for an Inbuilt Health Application in Oppo Phones
Introduction
The telecommunication industry is a highly volatile industry that requires every player within this specific industry to ensure constant innovation and invention to stay competitive. Distinctly players within the phone manufacturing sector need to ensure they constantly improve specific models within their portfolio to accommodate the tastes and preferences of their individual consumers. There are specific factors that drive innovation and invention among mobile phone producers across the globe. One of these is the demographic changes witnessed in the contemporary world. This has resulted in both generation Y and generation Z merging together as a target market with a considerable consumption force and power(Boeker, Howard, Basu & Sahaym, 2019). Considering that the population within two generations were born and raised in an era of intense use of technology they have adapted to this and heavily rely on technological innovation and invention for emotional comfort and their general well being. Consequently, phone producing companies should primarily aim at exploring the different needs, tastes, and preferences among these two generations since in 10 years’ time they will be the key consumers of goods and services, displacing older generations like the baby boomers.
Similarly, globalization has also ensured the world operates under one roof of intense technological invention and innovation in a village-like manner. Through this, globalization heavily satisfies the virtual socialization needs exhibited by the generation Z and generation Y. Additionally, the emergence of chronic diseases has resulted in the call for sustainable business operations to enhance the safety of the world’s population (Hyysalo, Johnson & Juntunen, 2017). These sustainability calls do not only aim at the need for instituting environmental and resource-friendly systems and procedures but also develop effective systems and procedures that can ensure individuals leave a healthy lifestyle and consequently the general well being of the society.
Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp. Ltd (Oppo Company)always inspires to be one of the world leaders in the phone manufacturing industry. Through this, the company develops quality products that serve both regular consumers with relatively low income and those individuals with considerably high income in need of high-end products and services (Kim & Rhee, 2018). Developing an inbuilt health application will ensure the company effectively satisfy the health needs of its individual users. It will also ensure the compatibility of the company’s device to telemedicine services.
The majority of Oppo phones have an inbuilt fingerprint unlocking feature which is critical in this project. This feature will be modified for use in the measurement of heart rate. Similarly, the majority of these phones already have an inbuilt pedometer system that is crucial in tracking an individual’s step and distance coverage. They also have a well-enhanced camera system that is also crucial in facilitating telemedicine. The inbuilt health application will integrate all these features together to further enhance their effectiveness and the value individual users derive from using them. This study primarily aims at presenting an innovation plan that can be implemented by Oppo Company in developing an inbuilt health application within the several models of their phones.
The design thinking of the inbuilt health application
The key feature that will be available in the inbuilt health application will include dietary monitoring, pedometer, measurement of heart rate, blood sugar monitoring, and the ability to implement telemedicine. The majority of the company’s phone models already have an inbuilt pedometer, which is used by consumers in tracking their physical distance coverage in a single day. This will be crucial in the inbuilt health application since it will allow individual consumers to perform their recommended physical exercise with ease. The superior camera technology within these phones will be used to implement virtual treatments. This is an essential feature considering that telemedicine is gaining ground in the contemporary world. The telemedicine will be further enhanced with a location-based mapping feature which will help individuals to discern specific health organizations that implement telehealth within a consumer’s locality, thereby link with them for emergencies and symptom maintenance services.
The fingerprint unlocking feature will be modified to measure an individual’s heart rate from the pulse in the finger. This will require an integration of a sensor that will allow perform these measurements at an individual’s convenience and generate the heartbeat graph. The application will also have the dietary monitoring feature which will allow individual consumers to record the different kinds of food that they have taken on an hourly basis and the quantity taken. This information will then be integrated with an individual’s heart rate to predict their blood sugar. The application will also have a competitive challenge for physical fitness in regards to daily track exercise. This will record the total distance individual covers on a daily basis and compare it with other individuals (Ozemek, Lavie & Rognmo, 2019). Lastly, the application will have a self-service software which will allow individuals to customize the application’s theme to fit their individual needs. All these features should be effectively harmonized within the health application with the use of well-enhanced and secure software with guaranteed optimal functionality.
User involvement
The individual consumers will find this application quite interesting to use given the different features within the App. The pedometer will be primarily used for recording the distance covered by the user. It will be automatic to record every single step an individual make while exercising or undergoing their daily activities. The physical fitness challenge will connect several users from different parts of the globe. It will have four levels depending on the distance individuals will be willing to cover. The first level will be equivalent to 2km. The second level will be 5km. the third level will be 10km and the third level will be 20km. Individuals will need to achieve the highest distance at a specific level twice in one month for them to be graduated to the next level. They will also have the opportunity to meet individual participants at their level.
The application will also have the telemedicine feature, which will help users to connect to healthcare facilities that provide telemedicine within their locality. This will enable them to acquire telehealth services with ease. On the same note through the use of the highly advanced camera system within their phones, individuals can also perform video conferencing to further enhance the telemedicine services they receive. Similarly, individuals will be required to record the quantity of different foods they consume on an hourly basis, which will allow for the application to predict their blood pressure by linking with the heart rate measurement. The heart rate measurement will be easy to perform since it will just require an individual to place their finger on the well-enhanced fingerprint unlocking feature. The fingerprint unlocking feature will be fitted with a highly advanced sensor that reads through an individual’s blood impulse at their fingerprint. This will record both an individual’s blood pressure and heart rate. Through all these, the application is developed to ensure constant interaction with individual users while they stay healthy. It is also built to accommodate the different needs among the generation Y and the generation Z’s population (Ullberg, 2017). The implementation of this project will ensure Oppo expands its market share in the telecommunication industry across the globe by cost-effectively satisfying the different needs among the consumers and ensure enhanced competitiveness.
Fast integration
The different features proposed to be integrated into this application will use their independent software before integrating these software to function uniformly in developing this inbuilt health application. Through this, there will be a need for building highly secure software since some of these features may require an individual to record their private health information. Protection for private information is always the number one priority of the company and it will ensure proper observation of this. The contemporary world faces constant cybersecurity threats, which present a significant challenge for the players in the telecommunication industry. The company will use its resources and capacity in building the needed software and integrate them to properly function. The company has opted for building this software on its own to help in enhancing its knowledge management system. The concept of knowledge management among organizations is also gaining momentum in which individual companies are required to develop the skills and level of information flow among their employees (Mazur, Barmuta, Demin, Tikhomirov & Bykovskiy, 2016). By developing the required software the company’s human resource will prove that they are up to every task they are called upon. Building the required software will also ensure cost-effectiveness within its processes and procedures, which is quite essential in developing the application to serve both the middle-class consumers and high-end consumers.
Since the application has been projected to be an essential competitive edge of the company for the next ten years through constant maintenance and renovation efforts to ensure superiority it has been estimated that it will require an investment of $ 300,000 in purchasing the necessary security protocols and procedures to be used in building the application. Similarly, a bonus of $100,000 has been set aside to be shared among individual employees who will be involved in developing the application to a point that it will be ready for use. The duration set aside for developing this application is six months. The six months duration has been estimated through the consideration of all the features involved, and the need for integrating these features to function seamlessly and effectively in the realization of a well-enhanced inbuilt health application.
Prototyping and testing
The application will assume the form of the normal applications. However, it will have two levels to suit the individual consumer’s financial plan. On the basic mode individual use will be able to access heart rate measurement and use the pedometer in tracking the physical distance they have covered. This will be in place to largely target the middle-class consumers who need assistance in enhancing their lifestyles to live a healthy life. Additionally, the dietary monitoring feature will also be available in this mode. This will ensure the basic mode covers the essential health elements that present a challenge to consumers in the contemporary world. The premium mode will also be available for everybody through the use of an internet connection. This will help them access telemedicine services and the physical fitness challenge. The company has opted for the use of internet charges other than actual remittance of a specific amount of money to allow individual users to control the amount they incur in using the premium services of the application.
There will be a need to perform proper testing of the application and its effectiveness and efficiency among consumers before rolling it out for full use. The first testing will be rolled out in Guangdong, China, and in two phases. The first phase will involve availing both the basic and premium modes on free to individual consumers who possess the new technology phones with these features. This is meant to act as a marketing strategy as well as gauge how individual users respond to this application. This phase is to take three months. The project coordinator will follow the total purchases made for the phones with this application as well as take ken interest in customer feedback, which will be available on the application. Success will be informed by the number of positive feedbacks and reported levels of engagement among users.
After the successful implementation of the first phase the product will be available for use across the Republic of China. This is expected to be successful considering that the Chinese culture is characterized by a strict physical fitness regime. Still in this sage both the basic and premium modes will be available to all users for free. This will further market the application to various consumers across the world. The full implementation of this phase should take six months. Success will be informed in a similar manner to the first phase. The second stage of the testing process will only be conducted in one phase for three months. The activity involved in this phase will be to introduce the need for an internet connection for an individual user to access features in the premium mode. This will gauge the level of preparedness to spend on data connection charges to use this application (Faccio & Zingales, 2017). The number of usage will then be compared with the number of usage before the introduction of data charges. If there will be no significant difference in the level of usage of the premium services between these two durations then the project will be ready for full deployment across the globe.
Cross-functional management
The application is meant to enhance an individual’s health in which they will be able to link their treatment procedures to their healthcare providers. Through this, the system has to be compatible with the numerous systems and procedures used by healthcare providers in implementing telehealth through video conferencing and a well-enhanced tracking system. It will also facilitate a real-time relay of heart rate information and blood sugar levels to the relevant healthcare providers (Shafei & Tabaa, 2016).
The physical fitness challenge feature will ensure content user engagement and comparing their fitness levels with other individuals from different locations across the world. Through this, they will be graduated in accordance with their accomplishments. Generally, the application is developed to enhance the health of individual consumers of Oppo phones, By giving them the chance to be connected with their preferred and available healthcare providers and other consumers to share common prosperity achievement.
Conclusion
The topic of health has presented significant challenges and opportunities for individual players within several industries across the globe. Specifically, the emergence of chronic disease has resulted in several consumers boycotting products and services marked to be contributing to the surge in the cases of these diseases among individuals (Goodyear, Kerner & Quennerstedt, 2019). It is within every consumers’ right to ensure their safety and general well being and so players within different industries should ensure they avail healthy products and services. Critical consideration of the different opportunities presented to businesses by the need for a healthy lifestyle among the majority of the world population especially the generation Z and generation Y can result in the creation of viable innovations. Consequently, companies can derive an unbeatable competitive edge within their environment.
The inbuilt health application is an essential tool in ensuring individuals lives a healthy lifestyle. The physical challenge feature within this application promotes an individual’s general well being as of that of the society.
