According to Sergiovanni, leadership is the realization of the set strategies efficiently and effectively. It emphasizes on the tactics of a leader towards achieving goals and on the quality of the results. The author gives ten principles of quality leadership.
In the nursing environment, the guiding principles-that give integrity and meaning to the leadership, is the most common leadership quality. The nursing environment responds to delicate objects, that is, the life of patients. Certain principles and ideals have guided leadership in nursing or a health department. In the Nursing practice, most leaders believe in providing quality service to serve and maintain good health care of the society. This evident in how: they strive to provide and maintain these ideal standards of healthcare in the community, they organize and manage health facilities/institutions, they make arrangements of practicality and flow activities; and the most important, they set standards for serving patients. By observing these guiding principles and efficiently communicating them to their medical teams, they enhance integrity in achieving goals, that is, providing efficient health care to all patients from varying backgrounds.
I prefer, Persisting-the attention given to important issues, goals and outcomes, as a leadership quality in the nursing practice. The nursing field has delicate objects and a little mess can end a life. Every activity in this field has a strict procedure, emergency cases arise more often, and the results connect to a ‘life.’ These factors need close attention and scrutiny of every activity to realize the goals as planned and to maintain the medical standards in the society. Giving recognition to every detail in this field, in particular, helps in focusing on the specific goals at a time and minimizes risks related to carelessness and negligence.
