Nursing Essay
Growing up in Nigeria, I have witnessed the manner a healthcare system that is not operating optimally can negatively affect the people. Even though I worked in a bank, I would see the manner that people often faced challenges in the process of trying to access proper healthcare. I know people who went to financial ruin simply because they wanted to get the best healthcare for their loved ones. On the other side, I would often witness how healthcare professionals and especially nurses, would be overworked and often without the right equipment needed for healthcare provision. After a while, I migrated to the US, and I got to work in the Harris healthcare system as a pharmacy technician. From my observation, it represented a huge improvement from the manner that the healthcare system worked in my native Nigeria. While there were some minor issues, it worked efficiently for the most part. I got to experience the impact that is created by nursing in a well-managed healthcare system. For a moment, I admired the manner that the nurses would offer quality services to the patients, which would result in an improvement in the healthcare outcomes. It is at that juncture that I felt inspired to pursue nursing as a profession so that I could have a bigger impact on society.
Admittedly, my decision to pursue nursing will represent a considerable shift professionally, given my current position as a pharmacy technician. Even so, I feel there is a need for a change to a position where I will be motivated to leave a more significant impact. In my time as a pharmacy technician in the Harris healthcare System, I have been exposed to different issues that emerge in the provision of healthcare. As well, I have seen the manner that nurses work towards solving them in a manner that shows a lot of ingenuity and a passion. That has inspired me to pursue nursing so that I can actively participate in the process of dealing with healthcare issues. I want to learn skills and the vigor to work that I have observed among nurses. Hence, I will of help to patients who are dealing with dire conditions as well as their families. My application to join Western Governors University has been motivated by the fact that it is the best place where I can the skills and competency that I need to be a nurse. I feel that their nursing program is very comprehensive, and thus it will equip me with all of the skills that I require.
Apart from the above, my choice to pursue nursing at Western Governors University is motivated by the need to be a part of a profession that emotionally rewarding. In my case, I believe that taking care of those who are sick or even in need will be emotionally fulfilling. That is because I will feel that I am part of a change in society. Therefore, I will not feel stuck in a profession that feels like more of a routine. In addition to that, my experiences as an immigrant in America have opened my eyes to the healthcare issues that are faced by immigrants and other minority communities. As a result, that has motivated me to join the nursing profession, given that it will offer me a way of creating a change where there is the most need. Also, I hope to inspire others to take the same path so that society will have access to quality healthcare.
