Jules Evans wrote an article on the topic ‘Are we Slaves to Our Online Selves?’, which is educative and well-articulated on the issue of online platforms. The author expresses the real problems that affect the current society, especially for the teenagers that are the most affected users of the online platforms, especially social media. The teens enjoy social media benefits when their online followers express positive vibes and like their pictures or online videos. “You replace actual loving human relations with the fickle adoration of the public” (Evans, 2013). The author illustrates that social media users currently rely on public opinion for their self-esteem. The addiction and dependence of public views and opinion results in depression when the public dislike the pictures or cyberbully an individual and may lead to suicide.
The current society portrays a disconnection between people, families, and youth because of the influence of the internet. In comparison to the generation before technology, people value much about friendship and interactions, but currently, the youth are more about social media platforms. Today, teens are likely to alienate themselves and engage the internet for their interests, posing a challenge to parenting where social media might influence them negatively. The author is right because people currently value a Smartphone, and a good percentage of them cannot stay for more than thirty minutes without using their phones when they are free.
