- Outline the two ways in which God and the right acts might be related, according to the Euthyphro dialogue discussed in Chapter 1.
One of the ways in which God and the right thing relate is that God will love a holy thing because it is holy. In this case, based on Euthyphro dialogue, one can deduce that it is not the responsibility of God to create holy things (Valasquez 22). On needs to find the right thing and do it. In essence, God is not responsible for creating the right thing; rather, it is the obligation of human beings to seek the right path, practice good doings, and as a result, he/she will attract God’s love.
The other way in which God and the right things relate is that the right things are holy because God loves them (Valasquez 22). From this perspective, one can point out that God creates holy things. It means that anything that God loves is holy, and it is the responsibility of God making something right by loving it. In essence, its God who is responsible for the wrong and the right things within our society.
Based on the illustration regarding the relationship between God and the right thing, then, in order to do the right thing, one needs to seek God’s love. In the same context, it can be deduced that God is responsible for the evils experienced in our society. If at all God can influence the existence of a holy thing by loving it, then why can’t He influence the creation of the right thing? Although the Euthyphro dialogue has conflicting illustrations regarding the relationship between God and the right thing, that fact stands is that seeking God’s love should be the obligation of any human being. It’s our responsibility to seek the just path that will lead us to God’s love.
