Personal Response to a Film: “Executive Suite”
Objectives: To provoke a discussion of tensions and challenges that you may face as you climb higher in an organization’s hierarchy.
Background: “Executive Suite” (USA, 1954), directed by Robert Wise, screen play by Ernest Lehman. Based on the novel by Cameron Hawley. Actors include William Holden, Barbara Stanwyck, June Allyson, Fredric March, and Nina Foch. Available for rent at Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango Now, and Google Play for $2.99.
Caveat: I believe this film raises business issues that are still very much relevant in our time, but please be aware that the way it depicts the roles of women in society and in business are no longer acceptable.
Required: Write a 2-3 page, double-spaced essay with your response to one of the following elements of the story in the film: (1) multiple ethical lapses by the main characters; (2) tensions between the pressure to succeed in the executive suite versus enjoying a healthy personal/family life, as shown by Ms. Treadway and the Wallings; and (3) the conflict between reaching short and long-term goals represented by the controller and VP for design and development respectively.
