Productive Counseling Techniques
Mental stress, disorder, or disturbance has severe impacts on the victims as it changes their day to day functioning, which affects their lives. Some multiple techniques and methods can be used to offer treatment to these psychological issues, and it is essential to always use the best technique for every situation.
Some time ago, I was working part-time in a fast-food store, and I witnessed the supervisor offering council to an employee using the advice type of counselling. This type of counselling is not effective as it leads to frustration and a waste of time; it results in the “yes but” counter-response. For example, in the counselling video Terry, the supervisor counselling to Jackie does not bare fruits because of the “yes but” counter-response. This type of counselling does not work because it suggests solutions to the other person before exploring and understanding them. The question style of counselling would work better in this situation as through questions. A counsellor can explore and understand the client’s problem before suggesting solutions.
I was once going through some difficulty in my academics, which stressed me up. I visited the school’s counsellor’s office, where she used the partializing technique of counselling on me. This type of counselling technique creates goals and plans that would build on my strengths to help me achieve my goals and targets in my academics hence reducing stress. This method was beneficial as it empowers someone and helps them achieve their goals during their treatment process. This technique is more helpful as compared to any other type as it empowers the client and, at the same time, help them reduce stress.
The focusing therapeutic approach is an effective technique that helps deal with mental disorders. In this technique, a thorough diagnosis is conducted on a patient, and a possible diagnosis is listed down and then removed from the list until one remains. I experienced this technique being used on one of my friends who was suffering from depression, and the therapist made a list of other mental disorders that might be related to the symptoms that he displayed. This method is effective because it is evidence-based, and it helps achieve the best outcomes from the treatment.
In conclusion, mental disorders and stress should be dealt with using the best method possible to prevent the adverse effects that they might have on someone’s life. The method that is used on any patient should be the one that offers the best outcomes of the treatment, and it should be the best out of all the options available.
