Qualitative data is a type of scientific research which gives information about qualities which cannot be measured. It helps one understand a particular research problem from the responsive target it involves. This involves use of open questions and unstructured interviews that permits the respondent to talk in depth with the choice of their own words. The process comprises an investigation that seeks an answer to a question, categorically uses a set of prearranged procures that help answer the question, helps collect valid evidence related to the question and produces findings. Qualitative research generates descriptive data. The researcher then proceeds to translate this data using transcription, code, and analysis tools. As it focuses o everyday life and individual experiences, qualitative research is a convenient tool for creating new theories which can then be tested with further research. Following the high number of suicide rates in Lorain County in the state of Ohio, the government developed a program run under by local organisation to help control the numbers and have a proper understanding of the problem. What is the root causethat drives many young people in this region to commit suicide? What measures can be taken to help reduce the numbers?
Social scientists usually use this method in their studies to help investigate an event or recurring norm that majorly occurs in a particular community or setting. A researcher draws a group of people and interacts with them in a discussion outlined to help acquire imformation vital to the research question.A focus groups consists 5 to 15 contributors. They must have a good understanding of their community. By asking the prearranged questions to the particapants one is able to acquire relevant information to help with the research. They can help answer the root cause of suicide among the youth.
Direct Observation
A researcher studies a certain group of people as they go about their daily activities. The researcher does not participate or interfere in their lives in any way and they can barely recognize him/her. The target group under study is usually not aware and therefore the researcher must conduct it in their public setting. Unknown to them, a group of unemployed youths consuming drugs or commiting other vices will go on with their normal daily activities while providing vital information for the research.
In-depth Interviews
A researcher speaks with theirparticipants in a one-on-one setting usually with a prewritten list of questions based on the participants willingness to respond. One might consider engaging with a suicide survivor from the area and have a comprehensive talk from what pushed him or her to commiting suicide and how they are coping. The researcher will find valuable information regarding root causes and ways on how to manage it.
Qualitative research helps create a comprehensive understanding of the interactions, events, social processes, altitudes, and behaviours that involves day to day way of life. As a result, social scientists get a better understanding of how daily life is affected by social forces like structure and order. Qualitative research methods are flexible and can be easily adjusted to adapt to the constant changing research environment and in most cases can be carried out with minimal costs.
