At Miami University, students and instructors held a panel in October 2019 to share the experiences about racial consciousness. The title Racial consciousness 101 is an initiative that was hosted and consisted of the panelists who were surveying students about the racial practices at the University. The purpose of the event was to raise racial awareness to the students of Miami university; therefore, the racial themes discussed at the event were sex, gender, and cultural impacts.

Racial consciousness is the awareness of members in a racial group that is shown by individuals and the entire community. This concept represents both social and popular understanding of how people live and accepts the people’s attributes. These include; culture, gender, language, and nationality, thus race and ethnicity may bring effects to the people, such as underlie individual identities, social conflicts, and determine the condition of life chances. For most Americans liberals, advocating for racial consciousness is unthinkable, but racism is never relevant when learning individual abilities and achievements. The panelist discussion on racial consciousness was connected to students of Miami University. The issue of gender, sex, and sexuality was discussed in an efficient way such that everyone in the school should bear in mind that gender discrimination is bad.

Racism contributes to the impacts on gender, sex, and sexuality among students at Miami University. The panelists discussed the awareness of the effects of race on the social life of people. Notably, racism can lead to inequalities in academics. For instance, the difference in academic achievements that are saying boys are scoring higher grades than girls indicate there is agender bias. Also, describing American people are better than the African American people is an example of racism. Racial discrimination on gender should not be practiced at all, as it can bring conflicts among individuals. The racial consciousness was to create awareness on the gender, sex, and sexuality discriminations that should not happen among Miami students and the entire Miami community.

Persistent inequality in Miami culture remained a critical issue for many decades.  Concerns and commitments of ending the issue of racism among students at the University persisted regardless of the effort made by the University. Students used to protest against racism in the University, but inequalities did not end. However, contemporary measures have been implemented to create awareness of racism. For instance, Miami students and instructors were invited to participate in the anti-racist initiative in October 2019 and also panelists sharing experiences with the students about racism. This shows how recently the institutional culture is ending the system of racism.

Intersectionality refers to an understanding of gender, sexuality, class, and race that emphasizes the analysis of known inequalities. The idea of intersectionality was discussed in the event by students sharing their experiences about gender, sex, and sexuality inequalities. The panelists mentioned the term in a way that everyone should understand and recognize the effects of intersectionality in the social settings, for example, when interacting with other colleagues with the opposite gender and different ethnicity. The issues of age, class, and abilities were among some aspects that relate to inequalities at Miami university and therefore, should be considered as a significant talk of racial consciousness.

During the events, some suggestions and strategies to prevent racism were discussed. They include awareness of the effects of racism on education and self-awareness. These are the main steps to stop racism at Miami University and in the entire Miami community. Students must recognize the importance of learning racism, sexual orientation, gender, and religion. Other strategies to prevent racism at school include; teachings on culture, lessons on race, and professional developments.

In conclusion, even though many people have made an effort to end racism in the school setting, there is still a challenge for some people who are still practicing. Racial consciousness is an essential strategy that was used by the Miami university to create awareness and support ending inequalities among students. Therefore, the effort of both students and instructors will end racism at Miami University.
