Reading is considered as the most broadly and thoroughly studied skill by experts in education. Many of the studies have been aimed at determining the criterion of reading and how different people learn to deduce meaning from textual information. The outcomes of the studies conducted have been attributed to the existing contrasting theories concerning what can be regarded as the best teaching of reading. From the theories, one can develop their philosophy of reading, as explained below.
From the concepts of the traditional view, cognitive view, and metacognitive perspective, my philosophy of reading defines reading as a constant individual training process for self-improvement. This is because it continually challenges one’s thinking processes making them acquire good habits of training. It also provides a discipline for gaining new concepts. This is demonstrated in traditional reading theory, which perceives reading as a linear process whereby readers give the word by word meaning of a text, connecting the words into phrases and later into sentences and paragraphs. On the other hand, cognitive view relates reading to a process where readers connect ideas in the text with the knowledge they bring to the act of reading and is not just extorting meaning from a given text. All these views clearly indicate that reading skills cannot be acquired instantly but through constant training.
Generally, reading is admittedly crucial to the self-improvement process, but only a few people create time for serious reading. What one needs to understand is that education is always a continuous process, and they do not only get educated at college, but they are preferably prepared to continue learning. Meaning, for one to be regarded as an educated individual, they ought to learn or read endlessly as long as they live.
