Setting Smart Goals
A smart goal is a set of guidelines that give a criterion that assists in attaining specific set objectives within a specified period (Smart goals: Definition and example). The smart goal must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely (Herridge). Specific in the sense that the target must be precise or clear what exactly is to be achieved, resources required to obtain it, measurable refers to the goal having a criterion of how it will be measured step by step to monitor its progress. Achievable, on the other hand, means one must set an objective or goal whose requirement is readily available for it to be met. For instance, one should be able to determine whether there are enough resources to assist in meeting the set objective. While relevant refers to setting a goal that, given the available resources, can easily be attained. Finally, a goal should be timely in the sense that it must have a commencement date and a finishing date. For instance, there are two goals to be achieved by an individual; finish school and be an expert in the stock exchange trade. For one to accomplish these two goals, there has to be a criteria that outlines the process of achieving these objectives and that is what we call smart goal. | My academic goal is to finish my four-year course by April 1, 2020, and graduate with a distinction. To attain this, I need to pass my final college examinations, and this will call for proper planning in terms of attending classes the college offers for my course, appropriate revision for my semester examination, and involve in consultations from my tutors in areas that need a more in-depth understanding. Therefore, setting up a schedule that will guide my revision process is necessary, and visiting the library often to get a variety of revision resources is also essential. However, I may encounter challenges of gaining access to some resources like revision material and tutors because this is the season where every student requires these resources. Still, I am determined to utilize the little that I get to achieve my goal. |
| M MEASURABLE | To attain this goal of I need to score above average (80%) in every unit examination that I undertake because this is one of the college requirement for any student to graduate with a distinction. |
| A ACHIEVABLE | Passing the final college examination is one of the requirements to finish school and graduate with good grades that will help in securing an excellent job in the future. Therefore I need a work plan to make my studies easy and also access a variety of books and other resources from the resource center to broaden my understanding of my education. |
| R RELEVANT | Working hard to get good grades is a significant academic role of every student enrolled in any college; therefore, I want to make sure I score above average (80%) in every unit. I enjoy my studies, and I wish to perform exceptionally well in my final examination in school. |

| S SPECIFIC | My career goal is to sharpen my skills in stock trade and be an expert stock trader by 1st April 2020.At the moment I only know the basics of this kind of trade therefore to achieve this goal I need to sign up for online stock trade classes as at 1st January 2020 and attend all the classes to gain an understanding of how stock trade is conducted and the resources I require to embark on my career. I am determined to accomplish this mission despite the fact that these online classes are quite expensive because of convenience but I will source funds from my savings to achieve this goal. On the other hand, I may face the challenge of being able to identify the best learning center for me to enroll because we already have too many colleges offering this course. However, I will do a research of a pioneer school in stock trade that offers online classes to enroll. |
| M MEASURABLE | Therefore to achieve this goal I will be attending four classes per week in the three months and i will be able to learn a concept and a skill in each class so that by the end of the three months I will have equipped myself with proper skills and therefore be an expert in stock trading. |
| A ACHIEVABLE | This goal is achievable because my savings are enough to cater for the course and it is also convenient because the classes are offered online therefore I don’t need to travel to the school or require boarding fees therefore ill save on traveling and boarding fees. |
| R RELEVANT | Stock trade is an area of interest that I want to specialize in, and since most online classes are conducted in the first quarter of the year and now that I have the funds necessary therefore I thought it’s realistic to embark on achieving this goal at this time. On the other hand, one of my new year resolutions was to learn stock exchange trade. |
| T TIME BOUND | In three months, I should be an expert in the stock exchange and therefore be able to buy and sell bonds, stocks, and other financial instruments. Also, I should be able to predict trends in the stock exchange market. |
| SMART GOAL | My career goal is to be an expert in stock trade by 1st April 2020, and it will be achieved by signing up for online stock trade classes by 1st January 2020 and pay for the classes using my savings, attend four classes in a week consecutively for three months to finish the package. After this period, I will have gained skills required to embark on my desirable career of being a stock trader. |
