SOCIAL MEDIA AND MOBILE PHONE USE.
The rapid growth in the technology and internet sector has led to a profound change to the day to day activities and behaviour individuals, this has led to tremendous improvements in the entire world; however, some negative detrimental habits have occurred as a result.
Addiction to mobile phones has been exhibited across the globe by individuals as they unconsciously reach it as soon as they wake and go on throughout the night using it. Most users seem to dedicate most of their time to phones, with some unable to do anything without interacting with the phone for different purposes such as sending emails, chatting with friends and catching with the latest trends among other functions. This habit has dramatically reduced human interaction amongst themselves with most relying on social media to fill this void left as a result.
Depression levels have also plummeted as a result of this addiction to mobile phones. Depression is caused by less human interaction and individuals are left to handle things on their own without seeking assistance from others, statistics even show that more exposure by individuals to mobile phones and other similar gadgets leads to increased feeling of loneliness. This feeling of isolation leads to increased levels of depression and in worst cases, may lead to suicide, notably on the increase and also directly linked with exposure to increased phone usage.
Over-reliance by children to parents is also on the rise, especially by millennials who grew up in the digital era. It is displayed by their reluctance to engage in activities such as having their driving licenses and even having jobs as they grow as most of the millennials prefer to stay indoors most of the time at the comfort of their homes with their mobile phones as compared to getting outside.
All these factors have dire consequences on the mental health of an individual and if not addressed, can be detrimental to the society at large. Individuals should strive to limit their screen time, and parents should restrict their children to little time on their phones and encourage them to go outside and engage in human interactions and sports.
