Student Challenges

Students face different forms of challenges while growing up. Although teachers require that students’ performance should be at least uniform, the challenges faced by students affect class performance. The degree of perseverance also differs; thus, some students become more successful than others despite going through similar problems. Max is one of the students who have had challenges in his life as a student. Max grew up as an immigrant child. Despite being a legal immigrant, the negative perspective towards immigrants has impacted his life in school. The climax of Max’s challenges was noticed when he joined the school band. Most of the band members are native citizens, and thus Max has not had a friendly company all through. The bonding between band members is essential both for individual and the general band, but Max has managed to soar through his challenges alone.

The enrollment to the school was a decision that Max’s parents had to force on him. Initially, Max wanted to join an immigrants’ school. However, Max’s parents insisted on taking him to his current school. The reason behind Max’s parents’ concern was the quality of education offered in his preferred school. Moreover, Max’s parents wanted him to pursue music as a career, and that could only be achieved by joining this school. Therefore, Max did not have his parents’ support in choosing the school that he wanted. Instead, he had to adapt to the new environment and deal with all the challenges associated with his presence in the school. Generally, Max had the notion that immigrants were hated and that they could not survive in an environment dominated by native citizens.

Max joined the school band as per his parents’ wish the second week after enrolled in the school. As expected, the first year was difficult for Max, but he learnt of efficient ways of overcoming the challenges (Jetten, & Esses, 2018). According to Max, success was the only tool he could use against the perception held by his peers. Generally, Max hated his presence in the band. Specifically, the role assigned to Max of piping the clarinet was not one that Max wanted. However, Max did not know that the hate that he had would one day turn into love, and he would grow to become a champion. Moreover, other band members were not impressed by Max’s behavior of staying alone instead of bonding with other members during practice. However, Max had his way of adapting to the environment.

The continuous presence in the school band appeared to have positive impacts on Max. The attempts to suspend Max for not cooperating with other members would always bear no fruits. The bandmaster understood the reason as to why Max preferred working alone and therefore, and he was let to be. In reality, Max had nothing against the other band members. However, the fact that Max did not want to engage in relationships that would raise wrangles forced him to lay coward so that he could enjoy his peace. Moreover, the other band members thought that Max would eventually get bored and leave the band at his convenience.

Time passed, and Max started falling in love with his career. The school band members could not believe the improvement that Max was showing despite his low start. The call-up to be in the school band for the city competitions marked the beginning of Max’s rise to glory. Max had a unique mastery of piping clarinet, and the group was beginning to shine above other bands. The band had been known for previous poor performances, and no one would expect that someday things would change. Unexpectedly, Max was the pioneer of the change that the band needed. The challenge of developing against the expectation of team members made Max a leader and eventually an icon in the school.

Currently, Max is a member of the City’s All-State band. The journey started with achieving a first chair, Bass Clarinet. Max did not relent and worked tirelessly towards becoming one of the best clarinets his school had produced. Besides, Max’s parents have been supportive, and his success can be significantly attributed to them. Also, Max learnt to survive alone, and he has thus become stiff and self-dependent.

In sum, the bonding between band members is essential both for individual and the general band, but Max has managed to soar through his challenges alone. Max had the notion that immigrants were hated and that they could not survive in an environment dominated by native citizens. The challenge of developing against the expectation of team members made Max a leader and eventually an icon in the school. Max’s parents have been supportive, and his success can be significantly attributed to them. Also, Max learnt to survive alone, and he has thus become stiff and self-dependent. Generally, the challenges that Max faced growing up as an immigrant shaped him to be one of the best clarinets that the school has ever produced.
