The concept of attraction refers to all the positive feelings someone develops towards another person. The attraction is associated with the ideas of; love, liking, friendship, admiration, and lust. There are three elements of attraction; physical, psychological, and behavioural attractiveness. The concepts of similarity, proximity, familiarity, mere effect exposure, and reciprocity. Film directors employ these concepts of attractiveness to produce attractive art that enables the audience to enjoy their films. This paper evaluates the concepts of similarity, familiarity, and proximity by analyzing how they have been used in movies to produce exemplary work.
In attraction, similarity refers to the tendency of people to feel attracted to people who have the same similarities as them. For instance, if I have a liking for the same game and ideas of a particular politician, I will end up being attracted to them. In other words, similarity implies that opposites rarely attract each other rand for attraction to occur; the two individuals must portray similarity. In the film, “The Hustler” by Robert Rossen, numerous episodes of attraction as a result of similarity have been shown. Most notably, Eddie Felson and his girlfriend share a common similarity of a self-destructive attitude. In this film, Eddie diverts from his career by disagreeing with his manager, which in turn makes him poor. For instance, Eddie refuses a proposal by Gordon, a gambler to fiancé his challenge, and instead starts dating a woman, Sarah, a good woman. She has turned to prostitution and drugs. This scene serves as a good illustration because it shows how two similar characters fell in love in a short span. In essence, Eddie had a wife, with whom they had numerous disagreements, and meeting Sarah, he finally fell in love with her since their attributes displayed significant similarities.
Familiarity refers to the association of good deeds to a specific individual. In most cases, familiarity implies that an individual finds the other attractive or finds their actions attractive. Most romantic films have applied this concept of familiarity to present attractiveness among characters. Additionally, familiarity implies that a character gets attracted to another due to the prolonged exposure to them. For instance, we may develop an attraction for our classmates due to the prolonged exposure to them. In the film, “Top Hat,” two characters get attracted to each other as a result of familiarity in older days. In this film, a showman called Jerry gets attracted to a long=lost personality, whom she had seen many years before this occasion. While in a London hotel, Jerry and Tremont realize that they were familiar to each other, and in this new environment, they end up getting attracted to each other. This scene illustrates the idea of familiarity in attraction because it is through their earlier encounters that they develop an attraction for each other.
Proximity refers to the theory of mere exposure to an individual. In other terms, proximity is the closeness or nearness of characters that brews attraction between these characters. Several films have similarly employed this concept of proximity to show the genre of romance and love. In the movie, “A Star is Born,” Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are rough together by talent. The proximity in this film is that the attraction between these two characters solely originates from their musical talent. This implies that an external force, skill, has made these two.
