The COVID-19 Collage
The cutting is a representation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The significant, star-shaped cutting is the virus that started at a specific nation, China. The other triangle cuttings represent the nations it is spreading (Europe, Asia, America, and Africa). The triangles are of different colors, illustrating that the virus spreads to every person and country, irrespective of color or orientation. Also, the triangles seem to be following a semi-circular motion, that increases halfway, and later decreases as you approach the end. The reduced movement shows the countries’ way of mitigating the spread.
Principles of Design used in the Art
Emphasis: The Art applies contrast to show focus. It has various colors, mainly four colors, to show the variation in country’s ethnicities. Also, the significant and spiked black cutting stands out, to show the pandemic’s source.
Pattern: The triangles have an ascending and decreasing trend that follows a semi-circular motion.
Rhythm and Repetition: From the bottom, the triangles assume a curved line that progresses for one round, then the lines regress as you near the top. Also, repetition occurs when the triangles reappear in color, line, and space. The rhythm is important as it illustrates the virus’s spread and effect.
Scale and Proportion: At the beginning, the spiked-shaped cutting is more significant than the colored triangles. Also, the spread is proportioned in such a way that it increases and later decreases.
Balance: The Art assumes symmetrical balance. The triangles have a similar shape, orientation, and representation. Despite the varied color, they can be interchangeably used in the curved lines. The balance mirrors that the pandemic treats every person equally, despite their nationality or color.
Unity and Variety: The Art’s unity is in the evenly distributed triangles, with the same shape, occupying the same space, and similar color for every region. Variety arises in the different colors used to show different nations and the different spiked-shape to represent the virus’s origin.
Point of Focal: The collage’s focal point is the black and spiked cutting. The cutting illustrates the origin of the triangles. When viewing the Art, the eye is first pulled to the cutting to trace the triangles’ movement.
