Introduction
The internet has been a double-edged sword whose real value in human trafficking has been dependent on who is using it. When it comes to the issue of recruitment of the human trafficking victims, there have been cases where the profiteers of this vice have been able to effectively use the internet, more specifically, social media platforms. At the same time, those working in the criminal justice department have relied on the internet in their quest to retrieve or get access to some of the people that have fallen victims of human trafficking. With the increased awareness of human trafficking, there has been a huge change in the manner in which the human traffickers operate. The use of force in capturing people to be trafficked has stopped, and this has mainly been a result of the need to make the process seamless so that they can elude the law enforcement agencies. As a result, the use of the internet in promising things that cannot be delivered has been the new norm. The unsuspecting victims have ended up being promised great lives and well-paying jobs, which have forced them to live their homes after being convinced by the images they receive online as a justification of the “bright future” that lies ahead of them. Upon getting into the hands of the offender, it is usually hard for the victim to communicate to the authorities for help since they are usually cut off from any form of communication. The criminal justice system officers have also used the internet as the basis of proving the culpability of the offender as well as justify through digital forensics that indeed, they were involved in trafficking of the said victim.
