Tuesday with Morrie
Morrie is one of the main characters in the book Tuesday with Morrie, who has, for a long time, been a sociology professor at Brandeis University. He is an excellent professor and happens to retire after losing control of his body due to a chronic disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The disease destroys his body but amazingly, leaves his mind as functional as ever. After some time, Morrie realizes time is sprinting and deems it fit to share his knowledge and wisdom on “The Meaning of Life” with the people before its too late for him. He has two channels through which he can convey the message to the world, namely; Mitch and the book itself. Mitch is presumed to serve as a vehicle to disseminate the wisdom. The book is another tool that he has at his disposal and can indirectly convey knowledge. In addition to this, he can reach the majority of the audience via interviews with Ted Koppel, which are aired widely on ABC-TV Nightline. Morrie decided to go to Nightline show to comprehensively and candidly share his wisdom on “The Meaning of Life.”
Firstly, Morrie went to show to inform the audience to reject the famous cultural mores and embrace self-created values. Morrie encourages people to reject cultural dictatorship because it makes the human community to suffer. He states that people ought to create their own cultures, founded on open communication, acceptance, and love. Morrie developed his own culture as a revolution against violence, media-driven greed, and triviality, which has faded the mores sponsored by popular culture. He advises Mitch to free himself from dictatorial and corrupt culture and create his own; this affirms that indeed he wanted to share his wisdom on the meaning of life.
Secondly, he wanted to share his wisdom regarding the aspect of acceptance through detachment. Morrie went to share his life experience where he fell sick to the point of giving up and feeling like not accepting his situation. He derives his technique of detachment from the philosophy of Buddhist that someone should not hold on things because none of the things is permanent. Detachment helps him to get out of his physical environment and gets into a state of mindfulness. Acceptance through detachment enables people to accept the impermanence of their lives, hence allowing them to have peace of mind.
Thirdly, he went to articulate love. Morrie affirms that the absence of love leads to the creation of a void that can only be filled by loving human affairs. When people get the love they require, they do not see any higher sense of satisfaction. As Morrie nears his last days, he understands the importance of love because without proper care of the people love him, he would quickly perish. He holds on to life not because he fears death, but because of his greatest desire to share his story with the audience. His sentiments show that indeed love conquers all trouble in life.
In a nutshell, it can be affirmed that Morrie is a protagonist character who loved to share his wisdom with the audience. He founds it pertinent to attend ABC-TV Nightline to share his life matters. The three key aspects he shared on the show include; urging people to reject the popular cultural mores and consequently envy self-created values, encourage people for them to have peace of mind, and articulate on love. When these aspects are put into practice, people can live a meaningful life. People are always argued to embrace change, and above all, detach from troubles.
