Use of sexuality in” The Haves and the Have Nots” movie series.

The theme of sexuality is used trough out in the film. Sexuality in this film is used to deliver several messages and teaching to the viewers. Homosexuality is the primary concern on the theme of sexuality in this film. The film consists of several characters who are gay. Jeffrey Harrington is the main character in this movie, and he is homosexual. Due to his sexuality, Jeffrey faces some challenges, especially from her mother, who is anti-gay.

In “The Haves and the Have Notes” movie, homosexuality is evident throughout the movie. Jeffrey, who is the main character, is gay, although he never wants anyone to know that he is gay at the start of the film. Jeffrey, who is Wyatt’s substance abuse counselor, develops sexual feelings to Wyatt even though they are of the same gender. Jeffrey never wanted anyone to note that he had a sexual feeling to Wyatt. This was a clear indication that homosexuality was not taken positively in their society.

Jeffrey’s mother, Veronica Harrington, was anti-gay; she could never, at any point, tolerate the fact that her son Jeffrey was gay. Veronica harasses Jeffrey to the extent of getting him a girl by the name Melissa to marry even though she knew Geoffrey was gay. Veronica arranges for her son and Melissa to have sex and get Melissa pregnant so that Jeffrey can marry Melissa. Since Jeffrey is gay, they never get along well with Melisa, as he has no feelings for her. When Melissa notices that Jeffrey is gay, she tries to tell Veronica, but Veronica could not tolerate any accusations that her son was gay.

David Harrington, Jeffrey’s father, accepted the fact that Jeffrey was gay and supported him. David even protected Jeffrey against Veronica’s harassment. This was an indication that David respected Jeffrey’s sexual feelings. Justin, a police officer, sexually arrases Jeffrey when he was arrested as he had sexual feelings against Jeffrey though they were both males. No matter how hard Veronica tries to change her son from being gay, Jeffrey never stops to be attracted to men, and he never develops sexual feelings to ladies.

Sexuality is found in a person’s blood; hence it is not easy to change a person’s sexuality. In the Film “The Haves and the Have Nots,” Veronica is trying to shift Jeffrey’s sexuality, but her efforts bare no fruits. Jeffrey even develops a hatred attitude towards her mother, and there is an instance we see him stabbing her with a knife to kill her. This shows how dangerous it can be to separate a person from his or her sexuality, no matter what kind of therapy is used (“Anti-Gay Therapy.” 2020).

The Haves and the Have Nots film demonstrates to viewers how people with the same gender develop sexual feelings and how different characters react to homosexuality. In this movie, the way Veronica can’t tolerate gay people seems real, as many people hate and see homosexuality as sexual immorality. The way David accepts Jeffrey’s homosexuality seems unrealistic as it is seen as if he does so because he loves his son but not because he loves gay persons. Sexuality was used in the movies to educate viewers on what to do and what not to do in case your child or friend has sexual qualities that you may not like. The targeted audience was parents whose children’s may be homosexual, and also it targeted the gay community. To change the director’s use of sexuality in this movie, I would widen the theme of homosexuality by also introducing characters who are lesbians.

In this movie, male children are not given their right to choose what they feel better for them. Jeffrey’s mother wants to control even sexual feelings in Jeffrey. I feel the use of sexuality in this movie helps the viewers to understand the best way to deal with gay individuals. The information discussed in class on sexuality has helped me to understand homosexuality well in the movie.
