Abstract.

The paper focuses on the outline and speech on the payment of college athletes by the National Collegiate Athlete Association. The outline aims at informing the listeners that despite NCAA earns billions of money in managing athletes, students who engage in the sporting activities are not paid. The papers put more focus on the reasons why students who participate in athletes should be paid. Although the organization sponsors the student who engages in these activities, it is still not enough since the money is not even adequate. First, the NCAA and other bodies that manage sports activities in colleges receive huge sums that are shared with institutions, coaches, and athletes’ programs. Since students participating in sporting activities makes it possible for these organizations to collect the money, they should be directly compensated. Second, the California court decision has legalized students to be paid as well as to be compensated by other non-school organizations, so NCAA deciding not to pay them is cheating and stealing from them. Finally, students who engage in athletes should be paid because it will help reduce the poverty level among college students.

Remuneration of College Athletes.

Outline.

Topic: Why college athletes should be paid.

General-purpose: To inform

Specific purpose: After listening to my presentation, my audience will have an understanding of why it is good to compensate college students engaging in athletes.

  1. Introduction
  2. Attention Getter: Did you know that National Collegiate Athletes Association, an organization that manages college sports activities in US colleges, collects 1 billion from the sports in college? However, it is unfortunate to learn that students who participate in these activities and make it possible for the organization to collect such a huge amount of money are not compensated. The money collected is distributed to schools to assist in athletic programs, giving scholarships to students participating in sports and administration.
  3. Thesis: College students who participate in sports activities should be paid because NCAA generates billions of money and players should receive more direct forms of compensation, not paying students who participate in the activities is cheating as per the California court decision, and paying them help to reduce poverty among college students.
  4. Listener Relevance: Listeners need to know that college students who participate in sporting activities are not paid despite their efforts so that they can help influence the Congress to pressure NCAA first to prioritize players rather than schools, facilities, and coaches.
  5. Credentials: I am a student, and I participate in sporting activities. Before I engaged in sporting activities, I did not take paying students participating in sports to be paid with a lot of concern. However, having the experience of the tolerance exhausting repetitive workouts, recurrent games, and the practice sessions I had to take every year made me realize that association between NCAA and schools take advantage of the students participating in sports. I felt the urge to discussing that college students should be paid because since it is not justifiable to exploit them since they tolerate a lot of difficulties in sports.
  6. Preview of main points:
  • First, the students participating in sports should be paid because NCAA generates billions of money, and players should be given the priority and receive more direct forms of compensation.
  • Second, the failure to pay students who participate in sporting activities can be considered as cheating, and NCAA should follow the California court decision.
  • Finally, paying students who participate in sporting activities will help reduce poverty among college students since most of them do not have time to do part-time jobs.
  1. Body:
  2. NCAA earns lots of billion in sporting activities but prioritizes paying coaches and facilities rather than players who are participating in sporting activities. Research by Kenyon (2018) states that sporting activities in college can be compared to businesses because they make a lot of profits. With the profits the organization makes, NCAA should prioritize paying students first since they are the source of profits.

Transition: NCAA and athletic department makes a profit and prioritizes coaches and institutions rather than students. The failure to pay students participating in these activities can be considered as cheating.

  1. Failure to pay students who participate in sporting activities can be considered as cheating because and NCAA should follow the California court decision. Research by Bokat-Lindell (2019) shows that California has already legalized the decision that students who participate in college sports to be paid. Not paying students participating in these activities can be considered as cheating, and NCAA should remove the differences between college athletics and professional.

Transition: The refusal to pay students is cheating, and students should be paid. Moreover, paying students involved in sports activities will reduce poverty in college students.

  1. Paying students engaging in sports activities will reduce poverty among students in college since they have no time to do part-time jobs. Thacker (2017) states that students who engage in sporting activities are faced with poverty since they have a tight schedule; thus, a part-time job is not possible to them. Most students come from poor backgrounds, and they deserve to be paid rather than just giving them scholarships, which is not even enough.
  • Conclusion.
  1. Review of main points:
  2. Firstly, there is the discussion that the NCAA earns a lot of money; thus, students should be paid.
  3. Second, the failure to pay students in sports is cheating.
  • Finally, paying students will reduce poverty among college students.
  1. Restate thesis: From the discussion on the renumeration of the college athletes, these students tolerate exhausting, repetitive workouts, recurrent games, and sessions of practices throughout the year. Listeners should actively help influence students participating in athletes to be paid since they spend most of their time, even on holidays participating in athletic activities.
  2. Closure: In conclusion, Congress should approve the NCAA to pay college athletes since they rely on them to make a huge amount of money.

Speech.

I am astonished knowing that bodies such as the National Collegiate Athletes Association receive such a considerable amount of money in managing athletic activities. Still, they do not pay the students involved in these activities. The funds collected in the NCAA during athletics are distributed to schools to help the administration, athletic programs, and sponsor the individuals who participate in athletics. Students who participate in the athletic activities sacrifice most of their time, even on their holidays, in college sports. They undergo tough workouts routinely, everyday games, and they take practice sessions throughout but are not paid. Today I am going to shed some light on most of you why college students participating in athletes should be paid. We can regard failing to pay students in athletes as cheating and students engaging in athletes should be paid because NCAA generates the amount of money through them, and by paying them, poverty among college students will be reduced.

Let’s start with learning about the National Collegiate Athletes Association. NCAA is a body that earns billions of money just by managing the athlete’s activities in colleges. Kenyon (2018) refers to athletic departments as businesses since they record profits throughout. Auburn Tigers, an institution among the top ten other institutions in the USA, manages activities in college sports, earned $147.5 in 2017. However, with such a massive amount of money that such an institution makes, it is sad to learn the fact that college students participating in sporting activities are not paid. Such institutions prioritize paying coaches and facilities rather than students who make it possible to earn such amount. A survey has already been conducted, and 53% of students and 71% of athletes support the motion (Hess, 2019). My fellow listeners, it is our obligation to stand with student-athletes and make the congress to allow NCAA pay students participating in sports activities since the massive amounts are made possible through their efforts.

Second, Bokat-Lindel (2019) considers it unethical, failing to pay athletes, and calls it a form of cheating. I tend to agree with the writer because a judgment by California court already legalized athletes’ students to be paid. NCAA is a non-profit body, and statistics show that it made $1 billion only in 2017. Students who participate in athletes are just the same as for professionals who take athlete activities as their careers. These individuals are paid through engaging in athletes, and as the same, students should profit from their participation. It is frustrating that the scholarship those students receive is not even adequate. The prohibition of NCAA restricting college athletes to take compensation from other non-school related organizations is arbitrary and unfair (Zema, 2018). Refusing to pay students can be compared to cheating from the students since they are not paid for their efforts. It should be our obligation to rise against NCAA and demand them to compensate college athletes.

Finally, refusing to reward students who engage in athletes and other sports activities results in increased poverty among college students. Collegiate athletes come across many challenges, such as their tight schedules, which amount to hardship (Thacker, 2017). With the tight schedule, as we all know, it is tough for them to do part-time jobs since they do not have time. Most of them spend much of their time, even their holidays, through practice sessions. Considering their thorough workload, some come from low-income families, and scholarship compensation depends upon GPA so its not always adequate, NCAA should compensate students engaging in sports and athletes. This will lessen the poverty level of poverty among college students.

As you can see, students participating in athletes endure exhausting daily workouts, practices throughout, and recurrent games. With such endurance, I take it as an unethical practice of NCAA to pay them for their efforts. We should take action to influence Congress to allow the NCAA to pay student-athletes since they make it possible for such bodies to earn massive amounts.
