- learning ideas and concepts is better than facts
- Audience;Students in higher learning institutions.
- Purpose;Enlighten students on the importance of learning ideas and concepts in the classroom instead of facts. Moreover, the purpose of the paper will focus on persuading students to agree that learning ideas and concepts is better than facts.
- Introduction;people are living in a complex world, and the young generation has been put in the spotlight to come up with solutions that could help heal it from the increasing challenges. In this tenure, where knowledge is seen as key to success, learning facts in classrooms would appear vital. Indeed, it is tempting to say that facts are the key to the modern world; thus, students should embrace and learn them in schools. However, I want to disagree with the statement because I think allowing students to learn ideas and concepts will help them to understand the use of facts.
- Reasons
- Argument 1;ideas and concepts play a pivotal role in formal education. The styles of learning in various institutions require a specific study of skills. These study skills to be implemented are crucial in learning facts. But it is vital to note that these skills are not necessarily natural. The skills have to be acquired. Therefore, learning ideas and concepts in schools will help students to develop facts and skills that will make work done appropriately. Notably, without learning ideas and concepts, students will not be able to learn about facts.
- Argument 2;the purpose of learning or going to school is to prepare students for full participation in society. Fundamentally, for one to hold down a job in the society will need some special skills to run the errand. For instance, if one pursues a course of becoming a pilot, it will not be enough for him or her to learn about the controls in the airplane. Pilots should have an idea of how it feels to be on an airplane. The same to the doctors. They are requested to understand concepts of safety and responsibilities before knowing a single fact of the medicine. Therefore, it is self-explanatory that students need to learn about ideas and concepts before they come to facts.
- Argument 3;even though facts are essential, it is the idea and concepts that allow people to use them. There is an expression that says, ‘Give a man a fish, and he will eat a day. Teach a man how to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime.’ The facts that teachers give students in classrooms are like the fish, but the idea and concepts acquired after learning are fishing.
- Counter-argument; I refute to some of the claims from the audience, supporting that learning facts in classrooms is better than learning ideas and concepts. I urge them to read between the lines to see the benefits of learning ideas and concepts before facts.
- Conclusion;the audience has learned that teaching facts without learning ideas and concepts is utterly useless. Moreover, the students have learned that ideas and concepts are the ones that develop facts. I want the study to buy the impression that learning ideas and concepts are better than facts, and spread the information to all institutions.
