Reflective Journal on Poetry

In the culmination of my week as a student teacher, I was engrossed in comprehending the essential information regarding poetry. I have familiarized myself with the initial steps involved in starting to compose a poem. My first place was the introduction to poetry. I understood what qualifies any piece of writing to be described as a poem (Super Teacher Girl).

Further, I looked into the different elements which are employed in writing a poem. They included form, sound devices, imagery, and figurative language. At the end of my learning, I composed a sample poem to assess whether I had internalized the frameworks of poetry composition.

In my second phase of learning, I delved further into understanding the parts of a poem. I found out that these parts are well grasped after going through the introduction part of composing poems. Additionally, it is a development in the introduction to poetry. I realized that the primary areas which make up the structure of a poem include; rhyme scheme, stanza, line, and voice or speaker in a poem (Super Teacher Girl). In my climax, I looked for a sample poem from Langston Hughes to verify if I could identify its parts. I proceeded to highlight the evident parts of the poem, which seemingly turned out great.

In my conclusion, I looked into major poetic devices.  I understood tongue twisters, onomatopoeia, metaphor, repetition, and alliteration (Exploring poetry). Moreover, I also learned about different types of poems that have been composed. In this section, I realized that mixed emotions usually inspire what poets write and also determine the direction that the composed poems will take.

Learning about poems and the necessary steps in composing poems is crucial for me as a learning teacher. As the cliché goes, “You cannot give what you do not have.” This proclamation made it essential to empower myself as I shape up for imparting information on the upcoming learners.
